Florida ranked #1 in natural disaster risk

Anyone who has lived in Florida for any extended period of time knows that the state, while beautiful, is vulnerable to natural disaster. In fact, a report says it is the number-one state for natural hazards.

This means that property owners need to make sure their real estate is properly insured. Unfortunately, sometimes insurance companies deny valid property damage policy claims because they are acting in bad faith.

According to CoreLogic, no state endures as great a risk of getting hit by extreme weather and natural conditions. The company created the study by assigning each state a score from 0 to 100 for nine disasters, based on how likely the state is to experience it. The disasters include floods, hurricane winds, earthquake, storm surge and wildfire. CoreLogic then calculated a composite score and ranked the states accordingly.

Florida’s score was 94.51, by far the highest; Rhode Island came in second with a composite score of 79.67. A scientist with CoreLogic said that Florida’s regular encounters with hurricane winds and storm surge, plus sinkholes, flooding and wildfires. Quite a combination.

The Gulf of Mexico, the California coastline and parts of the Mid-Atlantic States are among the highest-risk zones in the country, with nearly all of Florida in that category.

The last thing that someone dealing with damage to their home or other property after a natural disaster is to be wrongfully denied for insurance benefits. But it does happen. People facing severe financial problems without the necessary payout could find relief with the help of an attorney.
