One of the worst parts of any car accident is dealing with your insurance company. Car insurance companies, as with most insurance companies in general, are stingy and will do everything in their power to mitigate their liability. But there are necessary steps you need to take as a car accident victim after the wreck -- and one of those things is dealing with your insurer.

So what should you do and what should you avoid during this critical time? Consider these things:

You should...

  • Contact your insurer as soon as possible.
  • Review your coverage and take notes on the conversations you have with your insurer.
  • Be honest with your insurer. Lying could really hurt you and leave you in a worse position after the wreck.
  • Take pictures and document the wreck as best you can. This could bolster your case and give you strong evidence to show your insurer.

You should not...

  • Give a recorded response or written agreement to your insurer without understanding your policy and what you are getting.
  • Don't accept whatever the insurance company first offers you. Fully understanding your situation is the only way you will get the most out of your current predicament.
  • Don't ignore correspondence with your insurer or miss deadlines. This could also greatly complicate your situation for no good reason.
