Does your insurance policy cover mold damage?

A recent survey found that four out of ten people are mistaken about whether or not their insurance policy covers mold damage. As we discussed in our previous post, the details of insurance policies are incredibly important when it comes to the unanticipated events for which we buy insurance in the first place such as floods or fires or maybe just a broken water main.

Not all homeowners insurance policies are created equally and it is important to understand the terms in order to make sure that homeowners are getting the coverage they are entitled to under the policy.

According to the survey, conducted by an insurance quotes website, many people are also confused about issues like whether items that have been stolen out of a vehicle are covered by an insurance policy for their home. 73 percent of people were unaware that personal items taken from a car are typically not covered.

As we've discussed in the past, this type of confusion can wind up costing homeowners a significant amount of money if they think their basic insurance policy is more comprehensive than it is actually is.

For example, in the case of mold coverage, even when it may be listed in the policy an insurance company may deny the claim if the mold occurred as a result of improper maintenance or neglect on the part of the homeowner. However, it is also important that homeowners stand up to insurance companies when a claim is unfairly or unlawfully denied.
